When an escalator breaks, it turns into stairs. Technology shouldn't completely break when it fails. It can gracefully degrade.
VI. Technology should work even when
it fails.
Consider multiple stages to failure–from a usable state, to complete breakdown. Preserve the features that matter most, and include analog backup systems to extend functionality when primary power or connectivity is lost.
